I’ve been battling with WordPress so apologies to everyone for being slow to put these images up.
The Giacometti tree was a liked object, and there was a shared hatred of cutting down trees – Giacometti felt they were sentient beings.
This tree evokes a family tree too, for grids connect us. The Auerbach portrait of Gerda Boehm, with its look of Margaret Thatcher, the disliked object, is chaotic, the opposite of the grid tree.
